2022 Winners
We received 14 scripts from 7 provinces and are so proud to announce
our winners of our Annual Scripts on Fire New Play Competition.
Our jury consisted of – Heather Pattingale, Ayla Stephen, and Kodie Rollan.
Our winner is – “Vial”
By David Sklar of Calgary, AB and Montreal, QC
David is an actor/playwright who divides his time between
Montreal and Calgary (when not during a pandemic). He is a graduate of
theatre from Dawson College and the Bristol Old Vic. He also holds a
B.F.A. in playwriting from Concordia University. Crazy Love, his first
play has been published in an anthology entitled, Out on a Limb. He was
artist-in-residence at the Jerusalem Theatre Company,
Shakespeare-in-the-Rough, and assistant directed the Canadian Badland’s
Passion Play in Drumheller. He has acted with Theatre Calgary, Alberta
Theatre Projects, Lunchbox, Theatre BSMT, Annerin Productions and
Theatre NorthWest in B.C. He has toured across North America with the
Dora Award nominated and META Award-winning, Jabber, by Marcus Youssef.
And our two Honourable Mentions go to - Wendy Froberg and “Interruptions” and Dwayne Brenna and “The Promised Land”.
Jury
Heather Pattingale
Heather’s favourite things in the world are her husband, her daughter and her garden. Theatre is on that list too, and she’s been working in it for over a decade. She previously appeared on the Fire Exit stage in Badger. Other favourite credits include: Whispers in the Dark (Vertigo Theatre); The Scarlet Letter, A Christmas Carol (2015-18) (Theatre Calgary); The Diary of Adam and Eve, Outside Mullingar, The Last Train to Nibroc, Doubt, It’s a Wonderful Life, Our Town, Queen Milli of Galt, Mary’s Wedding (Rosebud); Talley’s Folly (Chemainus); We Are The Body (Burnt Thicket); Hamlet (Shakespeare Company). Elsewhere Heather can be seen in Joe Pickett (Spectrum), Heart’s Creek (Hallmark), the films Power Chord and Ties that Bind, or heard the upcoming audio drama USS Artemis.
Ayla Stephen
Ayla is a fourth generation Calgarian who has dug her hands into almost all of Calgary’s professional theatre companies as an actor, producer, or administrator. She has produced over 35 productions including professional theatre, arts festivals and sketch comedy shows, and was the Associate Producer of The Shakespeare Company from 2010 – 2022. Ayla holds a BFA from the University of Calgary and trained as an actor with Shakespeare & Company in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. She is an ensemble member (and former producer) of The Late Late Breakfast Show sketch comedy troupe and a founding member of the Bad Knaps Theatre Collective.
Kodie Rollan
Kodie is Philippine-born, Scarborough-raised, Calgary-based playwright, actor, and producer. Kodie holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters of Arts in Arts Leadership from Queen’s University. As an actor, Kodie is passionate about exploring how an Asian body can transform a story. He is excited and humbled by every opportunity that champions representation on stage. As a playwright, he is drawn to telling stories that examine the socio-political environment of our world.
His select acting credits include: Working It Out (Workplays Alberta), The Wedding Singer (Front Row Centre Players), BARE: A Pop Opera (The Honest Collective), and Spamalot (Front Row Centre Players). His writing credits include: The Watchdog Society (Downstage Theatre’s Simon Mallett New Works Program), Ya Burnt! (2019 IGNITE! Festival for Emerging Artists), Free from Phobia (2018 Body in Space: An Art Party), Funny Man (2018 IGNITE! Festival for Emerging Artists), Handle with Care (2017 Kingston Juvenis Festival).
